World premiere! A young, talented musician is striving for perfection in her art. Standing in her way? A magnificent wall. Bursting with the compulsion to reach the top, she invokes Canadian icon, classical pianist Glenn Gould to guide her towards dizzying heights - but the path isn’t easy. Each brick represents her art, her rigour and her challenge. Does she have the strength, or will she slip and fall into the abyss? Adventurous singers perform suspended from The Royal Conservatory’s atrium in this daring new opera, connecting the old wall’s historic past to the present in a thrilling staging that defies gravity.

Award-winning theatre artist and librettist Liza Balkan evokes the young artist’s rigorous journey, weaving many of Gould’s own words into the libretto, and acclaimed Canadian composer Brian Current delivers a thrilling, kinetic score. Directed by multiple Dora Award-winning Philip Akin, and featuring The Glenn Gould School’s New Music Ensemble.

Gould’s Wall is a re-imagining of the life of Canadian icon and classical pianist Glenn Gould and features singers climbing along the interior wall of The Royal Conservatory’s atrium. This daring new opera echoes Gould’s constant striving for artistic perfection and the inherent climb and fall in the artist’s journey.
