GGS at Toronto Summer Music: A Return to Live Performance

Many members of the GGS community participated in this year’s Toronto Summer Music Festival, which ran from July 15 – August 1, 2021. Concerts were offered both online and in-person at Grace Church on-the-Hill in Toronto, affording both audiences and performers a long sought-after return to live performance.  

Participants in this year’s TSM Academy Emerging Artist Program included Matthew Eeuwes (ADP ’22, viola), Jessy Je Young Kim (PDP ’16, 2020-21 Rebanks Fellow, violin), Katya Poplyansky (ADP ’18, 2018-19 Rebanks Fellow, violin) and Leslie Ashworth (BMus ’19, violin). Festival Artist included alumni Asitha Tennekoon (ADP ’16, voice), Keith Hamm (PDP ’11, viola) and Adrian Fung (Cello – Afiara Quartet / Quartet in Residence 2012-2016) as well as GGS faculty Adrianne Pieczonka, Angela Schwarzkopf, Barry Shiffman and Mayumi Seiler.

We have curated a selection of TSM concerts featuring GGS Students, Alumni and Faculty, which are currently available to view online for free:

From Modern to Mozart: Mozart’s String Quintet No.4 in G minor, K.516 is contrasted with modern works by Leo Chadburn & Amy Beach. Featuring performances by Jessy Je Young Kim, Matthew Eeuwes, Leslie Ashworth, and Mayumi Seiler. 

Romantic Inspirations: Recorded in Koerner Hall, this concert includes performances by GGS alumni Adrian Fung and Asitha Tennekoon, as well as GGS faculty member Mayumi Seiler.  

Debussy & Brahms: Quartet & Quintet performances featuring Associate Dean Barry Shiffman, Jessy Je Young Kim, and Matthew Eeuwes.  

Death and The Maiden: Works by Gubaidulina & Schubert, featuring performances by GGS alumni Katya Poplyansky and Leslie Ashworth.  

New Horizons: Featuring solo and chamber performances of contemporary works by harpist and GGS faculty member Angela Schwarzkopf. 

Quotable Quartets: String Quartets by Beethoven, Janáček and Smetana, featuring performances by Katya Poplyansky, Jessy Je Young Kim, Matthew Eeuwes, and Leslie Ashworth.
