Royal Conservatory Safety and Security Preparedness

For Immediate Building Emergencies: Call 911 first then Security
Please do not use elevators during a fire emergency
The Royal Conservatory's TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning is equipped with a wide range of monitoring equipment and staffed at all times with security officers who have received extensive training and certification and are available to help with any concerns. Students, faculty, staff, visitors, and other members of the Royal Conservatory community are asked to help maintain a secure and safe building environment by staying observant and aware of the RCM safety and security policies and procedures described below:
Building Emergency: Situations can vary from a weather emergency, gas leak, flood, fire or human threats to safety. Security will use the Public Address System to provide updates and directions during these events. If the PA system fails for any reason, security is equipped with loud speakers to provide direction. Those individuals requiring additional assistance leaving the building should seek help or shelter until further assistance is available.
Fire evacuation: The TELUS Centre has a two stage fire alarm, the first including a warning tone and message, "There is a fire alarm which is being investigated, please standby.' At this first stage, those in the building should pack up and be prepared to exit the building using the closest fire exit. During the following stage, alert tones continue along with instructions to "please leave the building immediately," at which point, everyone evacuates the premises (please do not use elevators during a fire emergency). Upon exiting, all evacuees should congregate in front of Varsity Arena (west of RCM) or next to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) (east of building) as directed by security and staff. If the weather is inclement, please move to the ROM where we have a reciprocal arrangement for emergency shelter. Security will advise when the situation is resolved.
Suspicious persons should be reported to security immediately by calling 416.206.8584. For any violent or dangerous individuals, please contact 911 and seek a protected place to hide and wait for help.
Harassment of any kind is not tolerated at The Royal Conservatory. Minors who feel as though they have been harassed, bullied, or mistreated should reach out to a trusted adult (teacher, staff, security). When harassment occurs, please address this with security as quickly as possible, so that any appropriate follow-up can occur. Staff members should speak with their immediate supervisor or Human Resources concerning harassment. At the time of harassment, victims or witnesses should take note of the exact details of the incident, identify other witnesses, and the location within the building at the time of the activity.
Severe weather may occur at any time; please feel free to contact security in advance should you have any questions or concerns regarding inclement weather forecasts. In the case of a weather-related emergency, everyone in the building will be advised by security with instructions.
Power Failures are rare at the Royal Conservatory as the building is equipped with an Emergency Power Backup system that ensures lights in all common areas and life safety systems function continuously. In the unlikely event of a power outage, please proceed to the ground floor and await instructions from security.
