I am a teacher with a colourful and diverse musical background. Classical piano studies were the foundation of my training, which now stretches into music composition, jazz piano, music theory, music history, ear training, singing, improvisation, percussion and rhythm, piano pedagogy and ethnomusicology (music traditions from around the world).
I hold a BMUS from the University of BC (composition and piano) and am currently pursuing my master's degree in music composition at UBC. I also hold a music diploma (classical piano performance and jazz studies) from Vancouver Community College. I am a registered piano and composition teacher with the BC Registered Music Teacher’s Association and a certified teacher with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM).
I am also a seasoned performer; my wide variety of experience includes orchestras, weddings, restaurants, concerts, busking and music and arts festivals. I have performed as a pianist, vocalist, fire performer and percussionist; in varied configurations including soloist, ensemble, band, orchestra and composer. Travelling, performing, collaborating, studying and teaching all blend into a well-rounded experience of music.
This combined musical experience allows me to offer my students a wide variety of possibilities in the realm of musical studies. My flexible background allows my students to eventually train in music that they like best. Classical studies are a great foundation but it is also important that students know how big music really is; there are many avenues and a niche for everybody that they can enjoy:)
Music studies also help developing minds in other ways; recent studies in neuroscience have found that music students specifically showed significant improvement in cognitive development and academic abilities. Improvements in speech and reading skills, memory, creativity and IQ were also noted benefits. (Please see “The Benefits of Music Education” at http://rcmusic.ca/resources for a concise summary of these studies.) Whether recreationally or professionally, the playing of music can only enrich our lives in countless ways.
My specific goal with my students is to give them a solid foundation in basic musical concepts, all while keeping music fun and enjoyable. My philosophy is: if a student is inspired to play then practice and hard work can follow more easily.
My students receive a well-rounded foundation in musical training including music repertoire, theory, musicianship, ear training, technique, music history, rhythm, improvisation, and sight-reading.
It is my deepest desire as a teacher to encourage and inspire my students so they have a life long and happy connection to music. I consider it a wonderful gift to be a music teacher!
