Mariah Mennie

I am an experienced teacher with a colourful and diverse musical background. Classical piano studies were the foundation of my training, which now includes music composition, jazz, music theory, music history, ear training, singing, improvisation, percussion and rhythm, piano pedagogy and ethnomusicology (music traditions from around the world). I have been teaching since 2011 and am very passionate about music education. I am a seasoned performer; my wide variety of experience includes orchestras, weddings, restaurants, concerts, busking and music and arts festivals. I have performed as a pianist, vocalist, fire performer and percussionist; in various configurations including soloist, ensemble, band, orchestra and composer. This combined musical experience allows me to offer my students a wide variety of possibilities in the realm of musical studies. My specific goal with my students is to give them a solid foundation in basic musical concepts, all while keeping music fun and enjoyable. My students receive a well-rounded foundation in musical training including music repertoire, theory, musicianship, ear training, technique, music history, rhythm, improvisation, and sight-reading. I hold a MMUS and a BMUS from the University of BC (composition and piano) and a music diploma (classical piano performance and jazz studies) from Vancouver Community College. I am a registered piano and composition teacher with the BC Registered Music Teacher’s Association and a certified teacher with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). It is my deepest desire as a teacher to encourage and inspire my students so they have a life long and happy connection to music. It a wonderful gift to be a music teacher!
