Alumni and Honorary Fellows Dominate 2017 JUNO Awards

Artists, groups, ensembles, and orchestras with a Royal Conservatory connection won awards in 14 categories at the 2017 JUNO Awards
Alumni of The Royal Conservatory dominated the 2017 JUNO Awards, winning prizes in nearly a third of all categories.
Artists, groups, ensembles, and orchestras with a Royal Conservatory connection won awards in 14 categories across multiple genres, as well as special prizes recognizing performers’ cultural impact and philanthropic work. The awards were given out on April 1 and 2 at ceremonies in Ottawa.
The members of beloved rock band The Tragically Hip – all Honorary Fellows of The Royal Conservatory – won awards for Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year, while lead singer Gord Downiewas named Songwriter of the Year.
Other high-profile prizes went to The Strumbellas, who won a JUNO for Single of the Year, and Sarah McLachlan, who took home the award for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year and earned an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Honorary Fellow Buffy Sainte-Marie received the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award.
Alumna and Bancroft, Ontario music teacher Dianne Winmill was named the 2017 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year in recognition of her work inspiring students through an innovative program of study based on The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program, our internationally acclaimed program of music study and assessment.
