RCM alum Miriam Khalil (ADP ’04) has been nominated for the 2026 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for her role as the featured soloist in Adoration, an electroacoustic chamber opera adapted from Atom Egoyan’s 2009 film of the same name.

Khalil’s nomination recognizes her powerful soprano performance on a live recording that blends voice, string quartet, and electronic instrumentation.

Adoration explores how viral misinformation, racism, and grief can distort public perception. The story follows a high school student who uses a French assignment to fabricate a terrorism-related backstory for his family, inviting the online world into the unfolding drama. Khalil plays Sabine, the student’s French teacher, a character who appears secondary at first but ultimately becomes a driving force in the narrative.

Reflecting on the vocal demands of the role, Khalil said, “Mary Kouyoumdjian wrote almost my entire range, and you don’t normally do that. It was an incredible challenge. There are moments where I’m up in the stratosphere, and then I end down in my chest voice for a whole aria.”

Although Khalil has previously received Juno Award nominations, she notes that this recognition came as a surprise. “We’re not a big company,” she said. “We’re kind of the underdogs in this category.”

A graduate of The Glenn Gould School’s Artist Diploma Program, Khalil has built an impressive international career performing across North America and Europe. Her repertoire spans Golijov, Puccini, and Mozart, as well as numerous contemporary works, and she is widely admired for both her versatility and her commitment to expanding opera’s reach to new audiences.

Miriam Khalil’s Grammy nomination is a proud moment for the entire RCM community and an inspiring reminder of how The Royal Conservatory’s commitment to excellence continues to nurture world-class talent and shape the global music landscape.

Please join us in congratulating Miriam Khalil on this outstanding achievement.
