Students and Alumni from The Royal Conservatory once again dominated the Shean Competition, capturing top honours at this prestigious event’s 2025 edition.

Mira Kardan, (BMus ‘28, cello) from the studio of Hans Jørgen Jensen and Andrés Diaz at The Glenn Gould School (GGS), was awarded First Prize which includes a $8,000 cash prize and the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a future date. Ms. Kardan, a recipient of The Temerty Foundation Scholarship at GGS was one of six finalists chosen from the 18 entries for the 2025 Shean Strings Competition on May 16 and 17 in Edmonton, AB.

Grace Lau (BMus ‘26, violin) also from GGS and a graduate of The Phil and Eli Taylor Academy for Young Artists placed third, while fellow Taylor Academy alumnus Elliot Sloss (cello), took home Fourth Prize.

The Shean Competition, held annually, alternates between piano and string instruments and is known for its rigorous selection process and competitive field. This year’s event featured outstanding young artists from across the country, chosen through a combination of submissions and live performances.

The 2025 Shean Strings Competition marks the third year in a row that The Royal Conservatory has made a strong showing. Past winners include GGS student Henry From, who took the piano prize in 2024, and violinist Benjamin Seah, who won the strings competition in 2023. Other finalists with RCM ties include alumni Olivia Yelim Cho, Melissa Du, Dale Jeong, and Daria Schibitcaia

The Royal Conservatory congratulates all participants and winners, whose accomplishments contribute significantly to Canada’s rich musical culture.
