Adrianne Pieczonka is one of the world's leading sopranos of her generation. She is internationally celebrated for her operatic interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Verdi and Puccini. She has brought to life such powerful women as Tosca, Chrysothemis, Sieglinde, Leonore, The Marschallin, The Kaiserin, Ariadne, Arabella, Elisabetta, and Amelia on leading opera stages in Europe, North America and Asia.
Adrianne has performed for over three decades at The Metropolitan Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, ROH Covent Garden, La Scala Milan, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid, Munich, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Los Angeles, San Francisco as well as some of Europe’s finest summer festivals including Salzburg, Bayreuth, Glyndebourne and Aix-en-Provence. Adrianne has sung under the direction of such conductors as James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Kirill Petrenko, Claudio Abbado, the late Richard Bradshaw, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Christian Thielemann, Franz Welser Möst and the late Sir Georg Solti.
A consummate concert and recital artist, Adrianne has performed recitals in Canada and throughout Europe with pianists Wolfram Rieger, Brian Zeger and Liz Upchurch among others. She is a Grammy Award nominee and in 2010 she won a Juno Award for her CD "Adrianne sings Puccini" on the Orfeo Label. She won a Dora Mavor Moore Award in 2004 for her portrayal of Sieglinde in Die Walküre with the COC.
Adrianne began her career at the Canadian Opera Company in
Lady MacBeth of Mtsensk in 1988, returning to that company in 1994 to sing the role of Mimi in
La Bohème. In 1989 she joined the Vienna Volksoper and established her home and career in Europe. In 1991 she became a member of the Vienna Staatsoper where she has sung as a guest artist for over thirty years.
Adrianne is an Officer of the Order of Canada, the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and was named Kammersängerin by the Austrian government in 2007. In May 2013, she was named an Honorary Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music and in 2014 she received the Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award. Adrianne holds Honorary Doctorates from her alma mater, the University of Western Ontario, and from McMaster University.
Adrianne is a dedicated educator, mentoring young singers around the world and conducting guest master classes throughout North America and Europe. She has worked with the Young Artists at the Lindemann Program at the Metropolitan Opera, with the Young Artists at the Vienna State Opera, with the COC Ensemble and at many of Canada's leading universities. Since 2019, Adrianne is Chair in Voice at GGS where she plans and casts the opera productions, oversees all visiting masterclass visitors as well as teaching voice.
