Course Description

Delivered online via Zoom

With the growing recognition of the benefits of music education for young children, there is no better time to study Early Childhood Music Education. This two-week (13-day) intensive course focuses on the foundations of music programming for young children. Led by instructors Ewa Krzatala and Sophie Bell, students will participate daily in lectures, workshops, discussions, small group work, ear training, presentations, observations of live and pre-recorded classes, and practice teaching.

Students will learn about the philosophies and methods of the most influential pedagogies including Dalcroze, Kodály, Orff, and Suzuki. They will develop a framework for selecting and programming musical activities, with consideration given to factors such as child development, musical development, the intrinsic musical quality of songs and games, and joyful participation.

Course work will include offline assignments. In place of field trips to observe and practice teaching in a daycare environment, an equivalent project will be assigned.

In total, students will complete 60 hours of course work, including 42 hours of synchronous learning (3 hours per day including break) and 18 hours of asynchronous learning (2 hours per day).

Students who successfully complete Music in Early Childhood Summer Intensive will receive a certificate.
