Course Description
Open the door to the many beautiful musical styles of Brazil!
Samba is music for dancing!
Open the door to the sounds of Brazil! In this class you'll be part of a traditional samba band. You'll be led by the instructor who directs call and response, brings in and stops instruments, calls breaks in the rhythm, and directs changes in the tempo using hand signals, a high-pitched drum called a repenique, and a whistle called an apito. Students will learn by ear, with mentorship from more advanced players, and coaching by the instructor.
Brazilian Samba: Level 1
Alô Bateria! Learn to play the instruments of the largest and most exciting orchestras on earth; the Brazilian bateria ensemble, from the Escola de Samba tradition! Develop your rhythmic sense, your aural and oral music skills, your musical memory, and your ensemble playing in a communal setting, while exploring the exciting music of Brazil's Carnaval culture. No experience required. Instruments studied include the caixa, repenique, tamborim, surdos, chocalho, agogó, atabaque, cavaquinho, violão and more! Instruments supplied. Singers and instrumentalists interested in learning Brazilian music, especially guitar players are also encouraged to join.
Brazilian Samba: Level 2
Simbora Batucar! This is an advanced level course for students who wish to perform Samba Enredo and solo percussion repertoire in a bateria ensemble. In depth study of the genre, advanced rhythms, with an emphasis on the tradition, as well as the study and performance of original, unusual and contemporary works, by some of the world’s important proponents of the style. Level 1 is a pre-requisite, to learn the core material for advancement to Level 2. Singers and instrumentalists experienced with Brazilian music, are also encouraged to join.
