The Royal Conservatory of Music and acclaimed cello pedagogue and author, Hans Jørgen Jensen, are excited to host 40 talented cellists at a one-of-a-kind cello workshop event at the RCM on May 20-21, 2026. At Cello Fest 2026, you will learn, practice, train with as one of the leading cello pedagogues in the world! You may also purchase tickets to attend this two-day exclusive event as an auditor.

Workshop Details:

May 20, 2026 (Day 1)

VELOCITY TRAINING - World's Fastest Scales (10-11am)

Do you feel the need for speed? Scale speed? Join your fellow Toronto cellists in a rare opportunity to build scale velocity. Participants will be sent a training package with videos and sheet-music for how to prepare for the 2-part workshop and competition. All cellists are welcome to participate in the workshop, and entry to the two part competition is optional for all participants. 

ULTIMATE FUN IN THUMB POSITION (11:30am-12:30pm)

For all levels to refine to solidify and empower the left hand in thumb position.

TECHNIQUE: TONE BUILDING (2-3pm)

Build a sound that is clear, resonant, and alive. This session will focus on the core principles of tone production, with an emphasis on efficient bow use, natural weight, and freedom in both hands. Through practical exercises and guided exploration, participants will develop greater awareness and control, leading to a more confident and expressive sound.

CELLO CHOIR (3:30-4:30pm)

Join other cellists to be part of Cello Choir directed by Hans Jørgen Jensen. Repertoire includes Bach Air on G String and Brahms Hungarian Dance #4. 

Rehearsals will be during the workshop on both days, followed by the concert on May 21, 5pm. 

MAY 21, 2026 (Day 2)

SCALE COMPETITION! (11:30am-12:30pm)

* Judged by Hans Jensen and Barry Shiffman. Prizes include signed books by Hans Jensen from Ovation Press Books. CelloMind, PracticeMind, The Ultimate Fun in Thumb Position.

PRACTICE MIND with Hans Jensen and Oleksa Mycyk (2-3pm)

Harness the power of your practice mind to improve the effectiveness of your daily practice and bring shut to the process of advancing your abilities as a musical artist.

CELLO CHOIR - Dress Rehearsal (3:30-4:30pm)
