Crow Jonathan
The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School (GGS) is delighted to announce the appointment of Jonathan Crow as Director of the Temerty Orchestral Program and member of the violin faculty commencing in September 2026. In this newly created position, Mr. Crow will work closely with orchestral students, oversee curriculum and the selection of guest conductors for Royal Conservatory Orchestra (RCO) concerts in Koerner Hall.

His leadership will build on the RCO’s track record as one of North America’s foremost training orchestras, whose alumni perform in leading ensembles worldwide. In addition to his role as Director of the Temerty Orchestral Program, Mr. Crow will maintain a limited violin and chamber music studio at The Glenn Gould School.

“I’m thrilled to join the faculty at one of North America’s preeminent music schools. I’ve had a special connection with The Royal Conservatory since childhood, when I took RCM exams in northern BC, and I’ve been privileged to perform often in Koerner Hall—one of the world’s great concert venues. I’m honoured now to work with the extraordinary young musicians who come from around the world to study at The Glenn Gould School.”

Jonathan Crow

A native of Prince George, British Columbia, Jonathan Crow is one of Canada’s most acclaimed violinists and music educators. He has served as Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) since 2011, and in 2002 became the youngest concertmaster of any major North American orchestra when he assumed the role at the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM).

“Jonathan is a highly respected artist, known leader, and accomplished pedagogue whose connection to the RCM will only deepen with this exciting appointment. His consistent presence among our students and administration, coupled with his expertise and mentorship, will be an enormous source of inspiration. We are so excited to welcome him to our community.”

Mr. Crow earned his Bachelor of Music in Honours Performance from McGill University in 1998 before joining the OSM as Associate Principal Second Violin. A dynamic soloist and guest concertmaster, he has appeared with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Filarmonia de Lanaudière, and the Pernambuco Festival Orchestra in Brazil. He has performed as soloist with all of Canada’s major orchestras under distinguished conductors including Charles Dutoit, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Sir Andrew Davis, Peter Oundjian, Gustavo Gimeno, Kent Nagano, Mario Bernardi, and João Carlos Martins.

An experienced educator, Mr. Crow began teaching at McGill’s Schulich School of Music in 2005, becoming Associate Professor of Violin in 2010. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Toronto. His new role at GGS builds on his long relationship with the Conservatory, where he has previously taught at The Taylor Academy and led string sectionals at GGS.

Beyond his orchestral and academic work, Mr. Crow has shaped Canada’s music community through leadership and collaboration. From 2016 to 2025, he served as Artistic Director of Toronto Summer Music, during which time the festival achieved record growth and acclaim. He co-founded the JUNO Award–winning New Orford String Quartet, premiered works by more than 50 Canadian composers, and has recorded for ATMA, Bridge, CBC, Oxingale, Skylark, and XXI-21 labels. His performances have been broadcast nationally and internationally.

James Anagnoson, Dean of GGS, and Barry Shiffman, Associate Dean & Director of Chamber Music, said in a joint statement: “Jonathan brings a wealth of artistry, knowledge, and a profound commitment to supporting young musicians. This new position will give our students extraordinary access to one of the most exceptional orchestral leaders, performers, and teachers of our time.”

Jonathan Crow’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for The Glenn Gould School. Beginning in September 2026, his vision, artistry, and collaborative spirit will enrich our community and inspire the next generation of musicians.
