Alexandra Townsend

After almost three decades of teaching young beginners to advanced musicians in Montreal, I am excited to announce that I have moved to Nova Scotia and am opening a new private studio on the Halifax Peninsula.

Regardless of your level of playing, I will help you identify what makes your playing unique and coach you toward the technical freedom you need to be entirely yourself at the keyboard. My approach emphasizes healthy and efficient technique as a vehicle for detailed musical exploration and personal expression, and a means to unlock your full creative and performance potential.

I have a master's degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston (where my principal teacher was the late Patricia Zander, a student of Nadia Boulanger, and Yo-Yo Ma's pianist for 13 years) and a doctorate in piano performance from the University of British Columbia. A graduate and former lecturer of McGill University, I am also an experienced adjudicator and clinician and a long-serving member of the Royal Conservatory of Music’s College of Examiners.
