Alice / Jung Yi Daugherty / Hsieh

Hello! I’m Alice, also known as Jung-Yi in my homeland of Taiwan. I am happy to share that I have won a few awards as a flutist. That included first prize in several international competitions including the Taipei Music Competition, the Jui-Shin Music Competition and the Sun Yat-Sen University Concerto Competition. Additionally, I was a finalist in the 2009 Koussevitzky Young Artist Award (NYC) and a Prize Winner of the 2011 Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition. Yes, I have spent many hours in the music studio practicing! Prior to pursuing the US competitions, I was fortunate to earn a scholarship to attend the National Sun Yat-Sen University where I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was Principal Flute of the University’s orchestra for four consecutive years. I then moved to NYC and earned a Master of Music Degree and Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College the New School for Music in New York City. I studied at that time with Judith Mendenhall, Principal Flute of the American Ballet Theater. I have performed in ensembles and as part of an orchestra at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Space and Chang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. In 2008, I was invited to perform for the Consulate General of France in New York City. My private teachers included Judith Mendenhall (Principle Flute, American Ballet Theater), Helen Campo (Wicked on Broadway), Jennifer Gunn (Piccolo, Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Robert Langevin (Principal Flute, New York Philharmonic), Stefán Höskuldsson (Principle Flute, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), and Keith Underwood (Mannes CollegeMost recently, I studied with Nicolas Duchamp of the Paris Opera de Comique. I am also an advanced pianist, having been born into a musical family. My mom is a piano teacher and I played piano through high school at the level of concertos and other advanced repertoire. I enjoy teaching students of all levels. For very young beginners, I will often start with the fife and then move on to flute. I focus on ear training and developing solfege skills as part of my teaching. “Jung-Yi is a very talented flute player and possesses a warm sound and a solid technique” – Stefan R. Hoskuldsson, Principal Flute Metropolitan Opera
