Benjamin Schmalz

Teacher ARCT
I'm an award-winning pianist, instrumentalist, music educator, and composer based in Calgary, Alberta. I hold a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Western University, where I studied with internationally acclaimed pianist Stéphan Sylvestre and was awarded distinction for my graduating recital in 2022. I also earned a Master of Arts in Music Theory at Western in 2023, where my research focused on comparing medieval music with medieval-inspired soundtracks and video game music under the supervision of Dr. Catherine Nolan.

I've been teaching piano, music theory, music history, and cello since 2014 to students of all ages and levels across Canada, the United States, and Japan. Over 80% of my students who have taken RCM music theory and piano examinations have either earned First Class Honors or First Class Honors with Distinction. My teaching philosophy focuses on building a solid foundation of core skills - knowledge of basic music theory concepts, technique, rhythmic control, sight-reading proficiency, and ear training, while also exploring more advanced skills such as musical expressivity, phrasing, improvisation, and playing with confidence.

Over the years, I’ve received multiple scholarships and awards, including a 3rd-place finish in the senior piano category at the Cremona International Competition and several 1st-place finishes at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival. Currently, I live and work in Calgary, where I teach, perform, and continue to pursue new musical projects.
