Bichu Babu (Mathew)
Born into a rich musical heritage in Tripunithura, Ernakulam, Kerala, India, Mathew's life has been deeply connected to music from the start. Coming from a family of accomplished musicians, he drew inspiration from his father, a celebrated singer, as well as his grandfather and great-grandfather, both of whom were respected figures in music. His great-grandfather, Devassy, a distinguished singer and percussionist, became Mathew’s earliest influence.
At the age of five, Mathew began formal training in percussion, starting with Mridangam before progressing to Tabla, Chenda, and other traditional instruments. Actively involved in his local church choir as a child, he honed his musical skills and developed a profound passion for rhythm and melody. As a composer for the church choir, Mathew contributed to musical arrangements and performances, further nurturing his artistic talent.
Mathew’s education in music expanded with Piano training at Chods Academy and Drums certification from Trinity College London. He participated in various musical ensembles, and found a special interest in fusion music, skillfully blending traditional percussion with modern styles.
His musical journey has included numerous performances across diverse genres, showcasing his expertise in both traditional and fusion music. As a versatile artist, Mathew is also a talented singer and stage performer, captivating audiences with his powerful presence and memorable performances.
Mathew has shared his knowledge and passion for music as an instructor at various reputed Institutes in India and Abroad, teaching percussion and drums to aspiring musicians. His collaborations include innovative projects such as DJ Fusion performances and unique blends of Classical and Western styles, incorporating instruments like the Chenda with Violin to create cross-cultural musical experiences.
Now based in Canada, Mathew actively performs with several musical groups, including Dhwani Atlantic, the first Chendamelam group in Atlantic Canada, which he founded. Dhwani Atlantic explores the fusion of traditional Kerala percussion with global influences. He is also a key member of the award-winning Mark Riley Band, where his dynamic percussion adds a distinctive flavor to their sound.
