I have a B.Mus. in piano performance. I discovered very quickly that knowing how to play at an advanced level did not mean I knew how to teach it. So, I took some of the courses for ARCT Pedagogy and still, to this day, take courses/seminars to update my teaching skills. I also teach theory and voice (have grade 10 RCM) and the pedagogical journey in these areas is the same as above. Having suffered from performance anxiety, I know how to handle this with the students. Regular practice leads to improvement, which leads to perfection. If a mistake is made when performing, it's okay because they've done their best. I just say the things that no one said to me. I still love teaching and am blessed to have so many lovely children/teens in my life in such a special way ...and I'm not working to retire.
