Derek Chiu is an internationally recognized Canadian pianist and educator—and the only Steinway Artist piano teacher in Calgary. He is also the Royal Conservatory of Music's Alberta Regional Representative and has led teacher workshops across Canada and the U.S. for over a decade.
As a sought-after artist teacher, Chiu has been invited to give masterclasses and guest lectures at universities and music conservatories, including the University of Windsor, Lakehead University, and The Colburn School. He has performed throughout Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, and collaborated with celebrated artists including the late Roberto Cani, Saul Bitran, Laszlo Mezo, David Lakirovich, Kevin A. Lefohn, John Lowry, Sean Wang, and Dara Lynn Zusko.
Chiu earned his Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Solomon Mikowsky and Donn-Alexandre Feder, and received additional training from Dr. E. Gregory Butler, Joel Hastings, Dr. Thomas Green, and Kenneth Cooper. He also studied chamber music with Daniel Epstein of the Raphael Trio.
His students have received RCM Gold Medals, won local, national, and international competitions, and every student who has auditioned for university music programs—both undergraduate and graduate—has received significant scholarships. He offers optional summer study at the Cremona International Music Academy (Italy) and the Vancouver Island Music Academy (VIMA).
