Eric Chan

Based in Vancouver, Eric Chan is a pianist and teacher recognized for his expressive musicianship and reflective, student-centered approach to teaching. He holds a Master’s degree in Piano Performance from Western University, where he studied with Dr. Kyung Kim, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University under the guidance of Ms. Nancy Loo. He is a piano faculty at the VSO School of Music.

As an active and emerging performer, Eric has appeared as a harpsichordist, répétiteur, and vocal coach, collaborating with members of Tafelmusik and the Canadian Opera Company. He is deeply engaged in chamber music, regularly forming and performing with a variety of ensembles. His performance career includes appearances across Canada, Italy, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He has had the privilege of working with distinguished pianists including Jerome Lowenthal (The Juilliard School), Arthur Greene (University of Michigan), Rachel Cheung (Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts), Yoonie Han (New York University Shanghai), Gerardo Teissonnière (Cleveland Institute of Music), and Ian Parker (Vancouver Academy of Music).

In addition to performing, Eric engages in writing on performance practice, particularly on mindful practicing, piano choreography and technique, and music pedagogy. He is especially inspired by the ideas of Dorothy Taubman and Seymour Bernstein, which resonate strongly with his artistic and pedagogical approach.

Eric has maintained a private teaching studio for over ten years, working with students from early childhood to adults. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he has previously taught in both international and local schools there. His teaching philosophy centres on understanding each student as an individual, meeting learners at their level, pace, and learning style while adapting his methods to support their confidence and growth. He emphasizes healthy and coordinated technique, fostering a collaborative and intellectually engaging environment that embraces each student’s unique strengths and interests.

He also holds a Licentiate Diploma in Piano Performance (LTCL) with distinction from Trinity College London, as well as Grade 8 in Music Theory from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

Outside of teaching, Eric enjoys listening to jazz, exploring different cuisines, and spending time in the beautiful natural landscapes of British Columbia.
