Born in Hamburg, Germany, Heilwig studied at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg, and with Thomas Rolston at the University of Alberta, where she received her Master of Music degree in performance. She has also studied with Lorand Fenyves, Steven Staryk and the Hungarian String Quartet. Heilwig has been active as a teacher as well as an administrator, serving as department head of the music department at Malaspina University College from 1976 to 1984 and teaching at the Nanaimo Conservatory and the Vancouver Academy. She was a member of the (now defunct) CBC Radio Orchestra for 37 years She presently is a member of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, teaches at Trinity Western University, maintains a private studio, and works as a free-lance violinist/violist in the Lower Mainland area. She resides on a large acreage in Langley with her horses, dogs, cats and Eeyore the donkey.
