Biography of Ida du Toit – RCM Music Teacher
I grew up in South Africa and come from a musical family that placed tremendous emphasis on the all-round development of their children within culture. I played piano, recorder and clarinet in school and enjoyed musical activities like music exams, school band, eisteddfod, choir and making music as a family with my mother and sister who also studied music.
I did 2 music subjects for grade 12 (Clarinet and Piano) and played my highest piano exam in grade 11 and clarinet exam in grade 12. After high school I attended the University of Stellenbosh where I completed a Bachelor of Music Degree with a teacher’s diploma.
I taught at different institutions in South Africa where I specialized in music history, Harmony and counterpoint, preparation for piano and clarinet exams and eisteddfods. I also accompanied the Johannesburg Children’s choir and several school choirs and taught Orff Ensembles and recorder to numerous students.
We immigrated to Canada in 1996 and I taught music at music schools in Edmonton and Calgary and continue to prepare students for theory exams and piano exams following the RCM curriculum. Teaching is my passion and I strive to develop basic skills and musicality to all students that come my way.
