Ilkim Tongur

Dr. Tongur holds bachelor degrees in Composition, Conducting and Education, master's degrees in Composition and Conducting, and a Phd in Composition. She is a composer with an international profile. Her music has been performed in Turkey, Canada, the United States, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Japan. She has been playing the piano since 1983, and composing since 1994. She has conducted Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Choir between 2004 and 2006, Calgary Scandinavian Center Choir since 2017, and currently teaching Instrumental Music and Band at the Westmount Charter School for the gifted children. Dr. Tongur performed on the stage countless times as a pianist since 1989, and and a conductor since 2004. Ilkim Tongur comes from a family of performing artists and teachers, and as a continuum of a long tradition of successful teachers she enjoys sharing the joy of music and the search for excellence in music. As a teacher for almost 30 years of experience she has sophisticated skills to teach all at all ages and all listed topics. Ilkim Tongur taught in the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul, at the Preparatory Studies at the University of Manitoba and at School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary. Dr. Tongur works with young children effectively providing the fundamentals and love of music. She also support children who are exploring their potential as musicians and teenagers who are discovering who they are and adults who are looking for either fun or professional development as musicians. She builds strong relationships with her students around trust and love of music. Her students describe her as kind, funny, calm, passionate and dedicated teacher. Many of Dr. Tongur's students became professional musicians who are currently performing in respected orchestras and stages all around the world. She teaches composition lessons from early ages with great success. Dr. Tongur's students regularly achieve First Class Honours and First Class Honours with Distinction their piano and music theory exams. All is Welcome!
