My studio is happy and celebratory but also competitive and demanding.

Some of my students study music to build confidence, communication skills, and to experience the rewards of mastering a complex system that requires incremental improvement over a long period of time; These skills are useful in all of life.
Many of my students also land in music-related careers; they include opera singers, music therapists, record label producers, voice pathologists, audio engineers, music instructors, Broadway performers, Disney actors/singers, film/tv actors/singers, recording artists, songwriters, and music business managers.
A significant part of my students' development is achieved while preparing for RCM exams. I recently had a student call me after a rehearsal for a professional production of the musical, "Elf". He, in a pretend-begrudging voice, thanked me for strongly encouraging him to complete his grade 8 voice and theory exams. He was always determined to have a professional career in musical theatre and preferred to spend all of his time on MT repertoire - but I pestered him into continuing with RCM. After this "Elf" rehearsal, he wanted me to know that he was finding it easier than many of his colleagues to adapt to changes, including when asked to sing a new harmony or take on a new voice part. My student's sight reading skills are very strong so he wasn't locked in to the notes he had originally learned.
