Karen Wen

Karen Wen

Karen Wen has a great passion for music, which plays an essential role in her life. She started playing piano when she was six and started flute at the age of twelve. She played in the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Honour Wind Ensemble of the British Columbia Music Educators’ Association. She was selected for the National Youth Band of Canada. Excelling in competitions, she received 15 Gold Medals and multiple Silver Medals at the Vancouver Kiwanis and Richmond Music Festivals; she was also awarded the Most Promising Senior Flutist Trophy at the 2012 Richmond Music Festival, the musical excellence award, the Dogwood Scholarship, and the Tom Lee Scholarship. She represented the Vancouver Kiwanis Festival woodwind division to attend the national level of Performance of Arts, BC. Karen’s passion for music is reflected in her continued quest for greater music knowledge. Successfully passing a series of Royal Conservatory of Music exams, she completed Level 10 RCM at the age of sixteen with First Class Honours. Karen graduated from The University of British Columbia, studied with Ms. Christie Reside, and finished the dual degree of Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education. As a teacher, she enjoys working with students of all ages and abilities. Also, she remains an active performer and plays in the UBC Symphony Orchestra and UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
