Kathleen Stanyer began piano lessons with a neighborhood piano teacher at the age of 7. Beginning at age 12, she studied at the Langley Community Music School under Barbra Zielinski – playing in Surrey, Richmond, and Langley music festivals yearly. From the age of 13 to present day, she has participated in and led choirs and worship bands at her church, giving her the chance to become skilled at pop chording, transposition, arranging, and improvisation. These skills gave life to her natural love of composing songs, which she still dabbles in from time to time. Once graduated from high school, Kathleen took a Music for Young Children certification which allowed her to teach group piano classes to beginner students aged 3-8. At the same time, she enrolled in Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Diploma of Music where she studied under Jane Hayes for two years. Graduating from the program with distinction in 2012, Kathleen transferred to the University of Victoria to study under Bruce Vogt. She received her Bachelor of Music (with distinction) in June 2014. She received her ARCT performers certificate in 2015.
Kathleen is a passionate musician and educator, with years of experience in private piano instruction, performing and accompanying. She has always excelled at academics, and has a solid foundation in music theory and history; both subjects which she teaches with enthusiasm and conviction. She strives to give her students the skills and knowledge to become excited, dedicated, and passionate about music making in both classical and popular styles.
