Miya Otake

Miya Otake is an active performer, educator, and adjudicator based in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. Her music career has flown her around the world including Asia, Australia, Europe, Russia, North & South America performing Duet with her sister, Kaori Otake at famous stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York City, USA to Mariinsky Theatre performing Double Harp Concerto with Mariinsky Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia. She is a graduate of Royal Academy of Music where she completed her Postgraduate Advanced Studies. She has won countless awards, medals, trophies while studying under Uvic Professor Taka Kling and was her scholarship student at Victoria Conservatory and Vancouver Academy of Music where she is currently on faculty along with Langley Community Music School, Showcase Academy, Chilliwack Academy and Aoyama Harp Studio. Her teachers include Elisabeth Fontan-Binoche: Nice Conservatoire, Marisa Robles, Skaila Kanga, Daphne Boden: Royal Academy of Music, and Taka Kling: Uvic & Victoria Conservatory, and Lanalee de Kant: VAM and Takeo Okajima. She has also taken masterclasses with many renowned harpists of the world including Catherine Michel. Her students are scholarship and prizewinners of local and international competitions and she has been awarded the Teacher’s Certificate of Recognition by the Royal Conservatory of Music for her student’s continuous success in their exams scoring the highest mark provincially and nationally. She is a resident harpist of the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra and a founder and a director of award winning Westcoast Harp Ensemble creating opportunities for the members to collaborate with the VAM Orchestra, White Rock Symphony Orchestra, and Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra. Her students play with many local youth orchestras in Surrey, Coquitlam, Richmond & Delta as well as the Sunshine Coast Orchestra and Fraser Valley Symphony Orchestra etc. She also gives opportunities for the students to play at the fundraising events for the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival, Canadian Music Competition, Children’s Wish Foundation, Children’s Hospital, Opening of the Richmond Museum, Local Retirement Homes and her ensemble have been invited to play at the welcome home party for the famous Canadian Rock Star, Bryan Adams. Miya serves as the board of directors for the Westcoast Harp Society/American Harp Society B.C. Chapter, Vancouver International Music Competition, Canadian Music Competition, & Müzewest and also is an adviser for the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals and KPU International Music Festival. Miya has a harpist sister Kaori Otake who is a graduate of the famous Juilliard, Curtis and Indiana University. Sisters tours around the world together. Miya is also a president of Aoyama Harp of Canada Ltd. importing quality harps from Japan.
