“The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but rather the
gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.” – Glenn Gould.

These words express exactly how I feel about music. For me, music has always been more
than sound or performance: it is what calms me in stressful moments, sparks ideas when I feel
stuck, and brings joy into everyday life. I cannot imagine living without music, and I owe this
deep connection to my piano teacher, who taught with both knowledge and warmth, inspiring
me through his stories and encouragement. His influence showed me how powerful a
teacher’s role can be in shaping a student’s love for music.
I have been playing piano for more than twenty-five years. Although I did not pursue a
university degree in music, I have remained committed to continuous learning through studies
in piano, music theory, harmony, solfege, and singing. Since 2020, I have been teaching piano
in Canada, and I recently completed the RCM Teaching Elementary Piano course. Alongside
teaching, I work as a researcher in the neuroscience department at the University of Calgary.
This background gives me a unique understanding of how music supports brain development
and lifelong well-being. Research studies consistently shows that music education strengthens
memory, attention, problem-solving, and emotional regulation in children. For adults, music
offers both cognitive stimulation and emotional balance. These benefits are a central reason
why I teach piano: to share joy while also supporting long-term brain health.
As a teacher, I want my students to learn more than just playing notes. Some of the skills that I
focus on, include developing good technique, strong rhythm, musical expression, and effective
practice habits. I also encourage listening skills, creativity, and the ability to connect music to
daily life. My hope is that students will remember their lessons as a positive and encouraging
part of their week, a time when they could explore music freely and grow with confidence.
In my teaching, I primarily use the Piano Adventures and RCM books, which provide a strong
foundation while offering a wide range of musical styles, from classical and jazz to rock and
popular music. This variety helps students discover what inspires them most. As a member of
the Alberta Piano Teachers Association (APTA), I also encourage participation in local,
national and international festivals and competitions. Although participation is optional, these
experiences can build confidence and give students a sense of accomplishment. In addition, I

support participation in annual recitals, ensemble playing, and other musical activities,
because these experiences give students a more complete and well-rounded music education.
Whether my students are children, teenagers, or adults; beginners, returning learners, or exam
candidates, I shape my teaching to fit their individual goals. Some may want to earn high
school credits, while others may want to learn their favorite popular songs. Whatever their
goals are, I plan lessons to help them achieve those goals and to get the most out of every
class.
Comprehensive teaching means guiding students not only through repertoire, but also through
theory, ear training, sight-reading, and creativity. These elements together prepare them to be
independent musicians who can enjoy music throughout their lives, whether they continue in
advanced studies or simply play for pleasure. Piano study should not only teach discipline and
patience, but also spark creativity, resilience, and self-expression.
Teaching piano is both a privilege and a responsibility. Through it, I can share the joy of music
and pass on the same inspiration that my own teacher once gave me.
