Alumna Alice Lee Wins Prize at International Fritz Kreisler Competition

Eighteen-year old Taylor Academy alumna Alice Lee has won the second prize at the 2018 edition of Vienna’s prestigious International Fritz Kreisler Competition. The young violinist received the award on September 30, 2018, following her final-round performance in Vienna’s legendary Musikverein concert hall. 

Alice was the only Canadian admitted to competition, which attracts incredible young musicians from around the world. She’s also the first Canadian to win a prize since 2010. 

Originally from Victoria, British Columbia, Alice grew up in what she describes as a “very happy environment” and was encouraged to be joyful while playing. A former student of The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division, she relocated from New York so she could study at our Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. 

While at The Taylor Academy, Alice worked with acclaimed faculty members Victor Danchenko and Barry Shiffman. She would go on to win OSM Manulife Competition in 2016, and the Shean String Competition the following year. 
During her time as a student, Alice met internationally acclaimed violinist Maxim Vengerov, who selected her to be one of his students at the esteemed Yehudi Menuhin Academy in Switzerland. 

Alice’s achievement is the latest in a series of recent accomplishments for students and alumni of The Taylor Academy. On September 15, J J Bui was awarded First Prize in his age category at the 4th Hanoi International Piano Competition. Last week, seven students and alumni were named winners of the 2018 Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank Competition, earning them the privilege to perform with a priceless item from the Canada Council’s collection of rare instruments.
