Course Description

Take your playing and improvisational skills to the next level with weekly applied theory and improv group classes!

Jazz Theory, Musicianship & Improvisation (non-ensemble) is a hands-on applied theory class, designed to compliment The Oscar Peterson School's Jazz Combo ensembles, but can also be taken independently.

These weekly classes focus on improvisation, skills development, jazz theory, and composition. Students will become more conversant with scales and modes, and increase their understanding of how chords are built and reading notation. During each class students will get the chance to apply what they learn on their instruments. Those wishing to play in a jazz group should join an ensemble (Jazz Combo)

This course includes access* to RCM's Online Ear Training to help students further develop their aural and sight reading skills.

Pre-requisites: Beginner level improvisers are welcome to join this class. Students should be able to play major and minor scales on their instruments, and keyboard players should be able to play major, minor, and Dominant 7th chords in all keys.

*Students will be provided with a code to access Online Ear Training. These codes will be sent within the first few weeks of class and will allow access for a full year (365 days).
