Eric (Yudong) Chen

Background and Education: Eric Chen is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Diploma program with an ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance. He participated in the city-wide 2011 Calgary Kiwanis Festival and received the first place Gold Certificate for the Grade 10 Piano Solo – Classical category. He is currently studying composition under the guidance of esteemed Turkish-Canadian composer Dr. Ilkim Tongur and is preparing for a Licentiate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (LRCM) exam. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Teaching Expertise: Eric has taught several hundred piano and music theory students from ages 5 to 60 in the past 13 years. He is an RCM-Certified teacher, with RCM Certifications in ALL Theory and Piano categories under the RCM curriculum. Eric’s piano students averaged 90.0% on piano exams from 2022 to 2024 YTD, based on 14 piano exams from Levels 2 to 10. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ RCM Gold Medal Achievements: Eric has had 4 students win Provincial and National Gold Medals on their RCM exams, representing the highest mark in the region (Alberta, NWT, Nunavut) or in Canada that year: Level 4 Regional – 2016, Level 7 National – 2020, Level 8 Regional – 2020, and Level 7 Regional – 2022. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Performance Opportunities: Eric’s piano students have an opportunity to perform at monthly recitals at a professional performance venue, hosted by a joint piano teacher collective headed by RCM 2020 Teacher of Distinction Allen Reiser, known as the Calgary Piano Performance Collective. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Teaching Philosophy: Eric’s students learn the fundamentals of solid piano technique from the very beginning. He ensures they become accustomed early on to sound musical principles through guided exploration and find applications of the benefits of music-learning in their everyday lives. His teaching philosophy is to have students find their personal “why” for learning music, have fun while doing so, and engage themselves in new musical challenges in order to grow.
