The ARC Ensemble, The Royal Conservatory’s acclaimed chamber ensemble-in-residence, has received a Grammy Award nomination for its latest recording.
The ARC Ensemble, The Royal Conservatory’s acclaimed chamber ensemble-in-residence, has received a Grammy Award nomination for its latest recording. ARC is the only Canadian ensemble among the five nominees. The announcement, along with other Grammy nominations, was made in Los Angeles on December 6.
Released on Chandos Records and dedicated to the work of Polish-American composer Jerzy Fitelberg, the album was recognized in the category of Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Its producer David Frost was nominated in the Category Producer of the Year. This is the third Grammy Award nomination for The ARC Ensemble.
Prior to the nomination the recording had already earned rave reviews from critics around the world. British classical music magazine The Strad hailed it it as “first-class music, well played and recorded.” The Boston Globe named it one of the top classical albums of 2015.
The Grammy nomination is the latest in a string of successes for The ARC Ensemble. On November 29 its documentary, Exit: Music, had its world premiere at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. The film tells the extraordinary stories of five composers who fled Europe with the rise of the Third Reich and how their lost masterpieces have been recovered.
Playing before a packed house, the film earned a sustained standing ovation. The event was the best-attended screening in the history of our popular Music on Film series, which is presented in partnership with Hot Docs.
The film has been selected for several international film festivals and has already secured distribution through First Run Features, a major North American documentary distributor.
The ARC Ensemble is comprised of senior faculty and acclaimed alumni of The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School, and plays a leading role in unearthing classical repertoire marginalized because of political suppression or racism.
It has performed to rapturous reviews on the great stages of the world, including the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and London’s Wigmore Hall. Its recordings enjoy regular airplay around the world and its concerts have been broadcast on CBC Radio, NPR, and on public radio throughout Europe.
The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will be announced on February 12, 2017.
Due to popular demand, Exit: Music will have an additional screening at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, beginning on February 10, 2017.
