Sarah is excited to be the newest member of the Percussion Faculty at the Oscar Peterson School of Music at The Royal Conservatory. Combining her experiences singing and puppeteering in a rock band for babies; performing and taking classes at New York City’s top improv comedy venues and schools; and teaching music for pre-K through grade 12 at NYC public and charter schools, she specializes in creating exciting and engaging classes for her students, fostering a fun environment of community and curiosity with learning music. Alongside her profile as a group-educator, Sarah is a passionate performer and private teacher, with a wealth of international experiences and happy students.
Following her studies at the RCM in Toronto, Sarah’s performing career took her to NYC, where she performed and taught music for 15 years. She enjoys an eclectic performance career as a percussionist and drummer, performing in orchestras, chamber ensembles, musicals, rock bands, avant-garde ensembles, Balinese gamelan, percussion with dancers, and drumming for musical improv comedy. Sarah additionally teaches drums and Rock Band at the Mill House School of Music in Toronto.
Career highlights include performing on percussion and live foley for silent films with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra; drumming for improvised musical, Shamilton, at The Kennedy Center, and for Offbook: The Improvised Musical Podcast; playing bass and acting/improvising with bluegrass musical improv group, The Wayfaring Strangers; playing percussion with the Glenn Branca Ensemble; opening for Wheatus’ 2019 UK/EU Tour as the drummer and backing vocals with Gabrielle Sterbenz; playing percussion at Jacob’s Pillow with Periapsis Music & Dance; touring China with the Manhattan Symphonie; traveling to Bali, Indonesia to learn music on gamelan instruments for performances with the New Atlantic Chamber Gamelan; performing regularly with NYC’s Georgian choir, Supruli; and participating in a song study tour in the Republic of Georgia and Eastern Turkey.
Sarah was a Percussion Teaching Artist with the Harmony Program in NYC, and taught their percussion ensemble at Queens College, and at the 2024 Harmony at Juilliard Summer Music Camp. She enjoyed a robust studio of private students in Lower Manhattan, and was on faculty at the Brooklyn Music School. She has taught master classes in percussion, reading graphic scores, and Balinese gamelan at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, and St. John’s University in Queens, NY. She was a singer and puppeteer with Rockin’ Railroad for several years, and studied character comedy, sketch, improv, and musical improv comedy at the Upright Citizens’ Brigade, The Peoples’ Improv Theater, and Magnet Theater in NYC.
Sarah is formally trained as a classical percussionist, and she holds a Master of Arts from The City University of New York at Queens College, Artist Diploma from The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory, and Bachelor of Music from McGill University.
