Canadian American pianist and conductor Dr. Chad Emry Heltzel made his debut with the Oregon Symphony performing Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto at the age of 15. He went on to study piano performance at Rice University, the Glenn Gould School and l’Université de Montréal where he received his DMA in 2009 and won the concerto competition performing Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto. Dr. Heltzel’s teaching incorporates a diverse professional background as a pianist, chamber musician, and conductor. He has taught piano at the l’Université de Montréal, the McGill Conservatory and served as a teaching assistant in orchestral conducting, chamber music, and Italian Diction at the University of Toronto where he obtained his DMA in orchestral conducting in 2019. Dr. Heltzel welcomes students of all ages and is dedicated to realizing their individual musical and career goals. In addition to participating regularly in the RCM examinations, his students participate in local and national competitions and have been accepted into performance programs at conservatories and universities across Canada. Dr. Heltzel remains active as a conductor and concert pianist having most recently performed a live-stream broadcast of J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations as part of Music at Southminster’s Master Piano Recital Series in June 2020.
