James Colwell

James Colwell, a distinguished Guitarist and Producer hailing from Toronto, boasts a wealth of musical expertise with over 10 years of teaching experience. His roots in classical guitar trace back to mentorships under the guidance of Rob Campbell and Eli Kassner. As a jazz guitarist, James earned the prestigious 2008 CBC Galaxie Rising Star award and showcased his talent with the renowned Yamaha All Star Band during his high school years. Graduating with a BFA in Jazz Guitar Performance from McGill University in 2012, he honed his craft under the tutelage of notable figures like Kirk Macdonald, Jan Jarcyzk, Lage Lund, and Remi Bolduc. Beyond his mastery of the guitar, James is a Grammy and Juno nominated producer, having collaborated with esteemed artists and producers such as Kali Uchis, Summer Walker, Vince Staples, Frank Dukes, Kenny Beats, and Wondagurl. His production work with Canadian artist TOBi earned a Juno nomination in 2022, while his contributions to American recording artist Lecrae’s project garnered a Grammy nomination in 2023. In addition to his impressive musical accomplishments, James extends his knowledge through teaching production classes, specializing in the Ableton recording program. His passion for both performing and cultivating musical talent underscores his commitment to shaping the next generation of musicians.
