BIOGRAPHY Canadian based, Czech-born pianist Markéta Ornova is praised for her sensitivity of tone and innovative concert programming. Markéta is particularly passionate about contemporary music performance, collaborative work with voice, opera and interdisciplinary performance. An enthusiastic performer of contemporary music, Markéta loves working directly with composers on their works. She worked with composers Philippe Leroux (2015) and Ana Sokolovic (2016) on their works, and has spent the last three summers working with conductor Veronique Lacroix (ECM+) on contemporary music performance. She frequently premieres works by emerging composers, and is active in commissioning new works, particularly for voice and piano. She has also had the pleasure of working with several Toronto-based contemporary music organisations, including Tapestry Opera (Songbook VII, 2017), Caution-Tape Sound Collective (2017), and the Canadian Marginalized Art Song Project (2016, 2017). Additionally, Markéta is looking forward to a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (February, 2018), where she will be focusing on the vocal music of contemporary composer Wolfgang Rihm. In her most recent project, she collaborated with theatre director Art Babayants on a subversive staging of Leos Janacek’s song cycle, Diary of One Who Disappeared, with tenor Colin Ainsworth performing the lead role (June, 2017). A passionate collaborative musician, she has given performances at the Canadian Music Centre, at Toronto's Arts and Letters Club, the Art Gallery of Ontario, on Italian television, and in the Czech Republic and Austria. Ms. Ornova frequently performs in master classes for such artists as Leon Fleisher, Menaham Pressler, Anton Kuerti, Lee Kum-Sing, Andre Laplante, Francis Perron, Michael McMahon, Warren Jones and the Tokyo String Quartet. Additionally, Ms. Ornova has attended numerous summer performance festivals, such as the Orford Arts Center in Quebec, the Toronto Summer Music Festival and Academy, the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Maine, the Adriatic Chamber Music Festival in Italy. In addition to her extensive musical training, Markéta holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University and has pursued graduate studies in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Markéta completed an Artist Diploma at The Glenn Gould School as a student of John Perry and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Toronto.
