Tamara Fonseca

Tamara Fonseca

Tamara Fonseca was born and raised in Calgary, where she began her music studies at the age of 5, on piano. At the age of 12, she began flute studies. Her background in piano allowed her to quickly develop an understanding and passion for the flute. She has a Bachelor of Music degree (with Distinction) in flute performance from the University of Calgary. About a year after her degree, she spent a year in Italy, studying with flute virtuoso Raffaele Trevisani at the International Academy of Music in Milan, and spent a week at the Sir James Galway International Flute Masterclass in Weggis, Switzerland. After returning from Italy, she did a music residency at the prestigious Banff Centre. Tamara also had the privilege of working with Susan Hoeppner at Le Domaine Forget, International Music Festival. Along with performing, Tamara enjoys teaching others to play the flute. She teaches private lessons, and is a highly requested guest clinician for various schools around Southern Alberta. Tamara has performed solo recitals for the Calgary Pro Arts Society, and has put on her own recitals. She has also performed with the Calgary Civic Symphony, the Medicine Hat Concerto Competition Orchestra, the Rocky Mountain College Orchestra, Storybook Theatre, and a Ravel Chamber Group as part of the ARIA International Summer Music Academy in Muncie, Indiana. She is currently principal flute of Alberta Winds, and formally served on the board as personnel manager for 6 years. The group has been guest performers in Vancouver at MusicFest Canada, and recently did a recording this past spring with Saxophone soloist, Dave Camwell. When Tamara is not teaching or performing, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, travelling, and keeping busy as a mother to her 2 year old son.
