Murray Smith maintains a private studio in the East end of Toronto where he prepares students for Royal Conservatory practical (piano) and theoretical exams as well as auditions and recitals. Some of his former students have been accepted into Toronto-area arts schools.

A number of teachers were influential in his growth as a solo and collaborative pianist: Lawrence Jones, Donald Henry, Tom Plaunt, and Michael McMahon.

Murray has examined in several communities across Canada and in the USA and has adjudicated at festivals in Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland.

He has worked as a rehearsal pianist and music director for numerous semi-professional music theatre shows in the Toronto area. Highlights include Oliver!, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Dracula Spectacular, Urinetown, and Legally Blonde. He also directed the Etobicoke Singers in a critically acclaimed choral performance at Massey Hall in 2012.

Additionally Murray Smith has been a member of the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008 (French horn), is a member of the Bell'Arte Singers, and has taught secondary school music in Toronto since 2000.
