With Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Abdullah Ibrahim on piano, and his band Ekaya, the evening will feature new arrangements of Jazz Epistles original compositions including “Blues for Huey,” “Scullery Department”, “Carols Drive,” Vary – oo – Vum,” “Dollars Moods,” “Gafsa,” and “Uku Janga Phambili,” woven in a beautiful concert program with Abdullah Ibrahim’s classic catalogue.
The bohemian bebop ensemble was “a group of musicians who were obviously in love with the American modern jazz of artists such as Thelonious Monk, Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker and John Coltrane, but also beginning to forge a more distinctively South African sound which they would develop as individual artists over the coming decades.” (AllMusic)
