“If you want happiness for a lifetime, help the next generation.” This idea reflects the principle of stewardship and serves as a guiding philosophy in my work as a music educator. I believe that teaching is not only the transmission of knowledge but also the cultivation of inspiration, discipline, and lifelong appreciation for music.
Music is often described as a universal language that connects individuals across cultures and generations. My own musical journey began in childhood when I developed a deep connection with the piano. From an early age, I discovered that listening to and performing piano music brought a profound sense of peace and emotional expression. Over time, my experiences with dedicated teachers strengthened my commitment to musical excellence and inspired my desire to share music with others.
Gratitude plays an essential role in both my personal life and my teaching philosophy. I believe that an attitude of appreciation encourages persistence, curiosity, and joy in learning. In my teaching practice, I aim to cultivate these qualities in my students while guiding them toward technical proficiency and musical understanding. Music education should nurture not only skill development but also emotional expression, creativity, and confidence.
My academic and professional training have shaped my approach to piano pedagogy. I earned a degree in piano performance in my home country and later obtained a performance certificate in the United Kingdom. I also completed professional training through Yamaha Music Canada in Toronto, Ontario, where I taught the Junior Music Course (JMC) and Junior Extension Course (JXC) for five years. My teaching experience began during my teenage years and has since evolved through continuous study, teaching practice, and reflection.
My pedagogical approach is strongly influenced by the structured curriculum of The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). I aim to guide students through a progressive sequence of learning that integrates technical development, repertoire study, and music theory. By following this comprehensive framework, students can build the skills necessary for expressive performance and independent musicianship. In the long term, I hope to inspire students not only to become accomplished performers but also to develop a lifelong relationship with music, and perhaps even become educators themselves.
A central component of my teaching philosophy is the development of a strong technical and musical foundation. I emphasize essential elements such as proper posture, efficient body movement, balanced hand positioning, and coordinated finger technique. These fundamentals support accuracy, tone production, and expressive control at every level of study. Equally important are encouragement and positive reinforcement, which foster confidence and sustain motivation.
In addition to technical development, I integrate music theory and musical interpretation into each stage of learning. Repertoire, etudes, and technical exercises aligned with the **The Royal Conservatory of Music syllabus help students understand the structural and expressive dimensions of music. This integrated approach encourages analytical thinking while expanding opportunities for artistic expression.
In the studio, I strive to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Introducing familiar works such as Für Elise, Jingle Bells, and Hot Cross Buns can help young students connect with music in a meaningful way. Activities such as singing while playing or imagining the story behind a musical phrase encourage creativity and deeper musical understanding.
Ultimately, my goal as a teacher is to build a strong foundation that enables students to experience lifelong growth through music. By combining structured pedagogy, technical training, and positive encouragement, I seek to inspire students to develop discipline, creativity, and a lasting appreciation for the art of music.
