Dr Bowen Li is an award winning Australian pianist. Bowen has twice been nominated for the Australian National Piano Awards and won the Leona and Bruce Sterling Prize in the 2022 Awards. Bowen holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Toronto and has studied with many famous pedagogues and pianists such as Leon Fleisher, André Laplante, Jamie Parker, and Dang Thai Son.
Bowen has over 10 years of teaching experience and has taught students as young as 3 and as advanced as undergraduate music students. He is an RCM certified teacher and a member of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association. His students have achieved high marks in RCM exams from level 1 to 10 and have been awarded top prizes at various local competitions such as the Kiwanis Music Festival, the North York Music Festival, and the Richmond Hill Music Festival. Bowen also received the “Outstanding Teacher Award” from the 2025 Richmond Hill Music Festival.
Bowen’s teaching philosophy is focused on encouraging and motivating students through positive experiences. He believes in making the process of learning music as intuitive as possible to bring out each student's musical potential. Especially since musical ideas can be quite abstract, he presents concepts in a way that is easily understandable by tapping into each person's inherent musical instinct and abilities. His teaching methods, especially for beginners, are inspired by Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory and Dalcroze Eurhythmics.
Bowen has a special interest in the development of a fluid and natural technique for the control of sound at the piano. His published thesis “The Moving Power of Music” investigates the use of movement and technique to influence the production and reception of sound quality at the piano. The instinctive control of sound at the piano is one of Bowen’s primary areas of focus for his advanced students.
